How to Join a Union

Are you tired of arbitrary discipline? Are you tired of unsafe working conditions? Are you tired of not having a choice when it comes to working overtime? Are you tired of not knowing if and when you are going to get a raise? Are you tired of being treated badly by supervisors? Then maybe it's time for a union.

1. The first step towards getting a union is that you and some of your co-workers meet with an organizer from the union. The organizer will explain in detail the process and what you need to do.
2. You then sign a card which states that you want UNITE to be your representative in bargaining for your contract.
3. When more than half of your co-workers sign cards, we then notify the employer that we would like to start bargaining for a contract.

Usually, employers will make an appeal to the National Labor Relations Board (the "NLRB"), and the NLRB will conduct a supervised, secret ballot election. All employees who would be in the union get a chance to vote. When the union wins, and the election is certified, collective bargaining begins.
