People are joining unions for a lot of reasons:
*Contract: Non-union workers don't have a contract. Union
workers have their health benefits, vacations, wages and raises
guaranteed in writing. The contract is an enforceable legal document;
non-union workers have no legally enforceable guarantee.
* Job Security: Non-union workers do not have the protection
of a union contract. That means that they are employed "at
will", and can be disciplined or fired at any time. Union workers
negotiate job security clauses into their contracts, which protect
them from the unjust treatment. "Just Cause" means that
an employer cannot discipline or fire you without a valid reason.
* Voice on the Job: Non-union workers have little or no
voice at work. If they ask for a raise or question an unfair policy,
they are at the mercy of their boss. A union employee is protected
by the contract, and can voice their opinion at work without fear
of reprisal.
*Equality: Unionization means higher wages for all workers,
but unions do even more than that. By raising wages for low-wage
workers the most, unions also reduce inequality. All of us benefit
from greater equality in the workplace; management loses the ability
to pit workers against each other and our collective bargaining
power grows along with our wages.
*Dignity: All workers deserve to be treated with dignity.
Union workers take pride in their work and the knowledge that they
a voice on the job. They know their rights and know that they have
power in the workplace.
